USDA APHIS-IPPIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Integrated Plant Protection Center) is a US government agency that works to protect the health of animals and plants from pests and diseases while facilitating the trade of agricultural products.

The agency focuses on preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species, controlling the spread of diseases in animals, and ensuring the safety and quality of agricultural products. To achieve these goals, USDA APHIS-IPPIS uses a combination of scientific research, policy development, and regulatory enforcement.

Challenges

We had to navigate through complex business requirements, technical jargon, and organizational hierarchies. Despite these challenges, we worked together to deliver an intuitive and user-friendly interface. My contribution to user interviews, wireframing, prototyping, and design proposals allowed us to gain valuable insights into user preferences and tailor the experience to their needs.

Our data-driven approach and effective collaboration enabled us to deliver the project on time and within budget, exceeding the stakeholders’ expectations. Working on this project was an excellent opportunity to showcase my design skills and ability to work in a diverse and complex environment.

Discovery Process

To begin the discovery process, we conducted user research to understand better the needs and pain points of the app’s target users. We interviewed Forest Service employees and other stakeholders and conducted user testing with the existing app. Through this research, we identified several critical areas for improvement, including:
  • Outdated design The existing app had an outdated design, making it difficult to use and navigate.
  • Lack of mobile support The app was not optimized for mobile devices, making it challenging to use in the field.
  • Inefficient data management The app’s data management system was inefficient, leading to data duplication and errors.
  • Poor user engagement Users were not engaged with the app, leading to low usage and adoption rates.
